A. GENERAL INFORMATION

A1. What is the Youth Health Survey about?

The Youth Health Survey (YHS), conducted by the Health Promotion Board (HPB), seeks to understand health behaviours and risk factors among youth in Singapore.

The study will consist of three components:

     1. Health Survey
     2. Health Screening
     3. hiSG Lite

A2. Who is eligible to participate in the Youth Health Survey?

Students who are Singapore residents (Singapore citizens or permanent residents) currently enrolled in selected Ministry of Education mainstream schools (i.e., Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges), Institutes of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnics are eligible to participate in the study.

Schools will be randomly selected by HPB for participation in the pilot study.

Students will be able to participate in the YHS Health Survey and/or Health Screening if they are

     1. currently enrolled in the selected schools as full-time students,
     2. aged between 16 and 25 years old
     3. Singapore citizens or permanent residents

As part of YHS, students who have agreed to be contacted for other research studies and data linkage* to these studies will be invited to join hiSG Lite if they participate in the Health Survey and/or Health Screening, and meet hiSG Lite's eligibility criteria.
*Students will need to indicate their consent in the YHS Informed Consent Form to (1) be contacted for other research studies and (2) link their data to other databases and research studies

A3. What kind of information will the Youth Health Survey be collecting?

YHS will be collecting your child’s health information and will include topics such as physical activity, nutrition, mental health, smoking and alcohol use. As part of the health screening, the study will also be collecting information on your child’s blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, urine cotinine, protein and sodium level.

A4. How will the information be collected?

The survey will be done by students at their own convenient time. The health screening will be conducted by HPB’s appointed vendors, and will take place in school so that your child does not have to travel to external locations.

A5. How long will the survey and health screening take to complete?

The health survey will take about 30 minutes to complete, while the health screening should take about 20 minutes to complete.

A6. What will my child be doing as part of YHS?

Health Survey

Students participating in the study will complete the survey using their personal devices at their own convenient time. The survey will cover topics pertaining to health behaviours (such as physical activity, nutrition, mental health, smoking and alcohol use) and will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Health Screening

Students will need to fast for at least 8 hours prior to the health screening and will be allowed to drink water. SMS reminders will be sent to your child 3 days and 1 day before the scheduled screening day to ensure that your child is prepared for the health screening session.

On the day of the health screening, a trained staff will conduct the following in school:

  1. Measurement of height and weight;
  2. Measurement of blood pressure;
  3. Collection of a sample of about 15ml of blood to test for diabetes and high blood cholesterol;
  4. Collection of a sample of urine for cotinine, protein and sodium level measurement.

The health screening will take about 20 minutes and upon completion, your child will be provided refreshments.

A health report containing information derived from the health screening will be sent to your child subsequently.

hiSG Lite

Students participating in hiSG Lite will be armed with a study device – a Tracker which collects user data such as physical activity and sleep patterns. They will be encouraged to wear the device as often as possible, answer questionnaires and log their meals on the hiSG Lite mobile app.

Participation in the study will last for 24 months (6-month committed period + 18 months optional period).

In order to ensure sufficient data is collected, all participants will need to meet the following minimum requirements of use during the 6-month committed study period:

  • Wear the study device for at least 8 hours a day on at least 7 weekdays and 3 weekends each month.
  • Wear the study device to sleep on at least 2 weekdays and 2 weekends each month.
  • Record your meals consumed on at least 2 weekdays and 1 weekend each month.

During the 18-month optional period, there are no study requirements. However, meeting the minimum study requirements stated above, will enable students to receive additional rewards.

B. ENROLMENT AND PARTICIPATION

B1. Why should my child participate, and are there any incentives from participating in the Youth Health Survey?

Your child’s participation in the YHS will help to improve the health of Singapore’s youth by enabling us to better plan and evaluate national health policies, programmes and services. Getting screened at a younger age will also ensure that risk factors, if any, are detected early, allowing for earlier intervention.

Upon completion of the survey, your child will receive a $15 token of appreciation in the form of Grab vouchers from HPB. Further to this, the full cost of the health screening valued at approximately $80, will be fully borne by HPB.

Your child will receive a free health screening report with a copy of his/her health screening results within six weeks of completion. The results include:

     1. Height, weight and Body Mass Index (BMI)
     2. Blood pressure
     3. Blood sugar and cholesterol level
     4. Urine protein and sodium level

Students with abnormal screening results will receive 3 lifestyle coaching sessions with practical tips and resources (30 mins per session via phone or face-to-face) to help your child achieve a better health status.
